Sport for Peace Promotion and Development
“Sport is a universal language that can bring people together, no matter what their origin, background, religious beliefs or economic status.” Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General

Sport offers a platform to build up and maintain dialog in societies in open or latent conflict situations. It reaches people, brings them together, furthers democratic values, fair interactions and trust. Sport can promote the social development and a peaceful interaction between communities and individuals. It is a tool to promote peace and development in post-conflict and high-tension areas. Therefore, in its effort for peace, exCHANGE organizes the 2005 Program on "Sport for Peace Promotion and Development".

Program 2005

Training and meetings
Thirty participants from conflict countries and high-tension areas will come together in Switzerland between 12-25 September 2005. The program will take place in Bern, Geneva and Zurich.

The young leaders will participate in a week-long training on: leadership development, conflict transformation and public relations. Sport will be used to train their leadership skills and team work capacities. They will meet representatives of different organizations active in the field of peace promotion and/or sport. The participants will be introduced to active democracy and federalism in dialog with Swiss politicians and authorities. Furthermore, the young leaders will represent their countries in a public conference which will address sport as a means of promoting peace.
