Sport for Peace Promotion and Development
Sport offers a platform to build up and maintain dialog in societies in open or latent conflict situations. It reaches people, brings them together, furthers democratic values, fair interactions and trust. Sport can promote the social development and a peaceful interaction between communities and individuals. It is a tool to promote peace and development in post-conflict and high-tension areas. Therefore, in its effort for peace, eCFP organized the 2006 Program on "Sport for Peace Promotion and Development".
Program 2006
26 participants from conflict countries and high-tension areas came together in Switzerland between October 1 and 15, 2006. The program took place Zurich, Baden, Caux, Flims, Geneva and Filzbach.
The young leaders participated in a two-week-long training on: leadership development, conflict transformation and public relations. Sport was used to train their leadership skills and team work capacities. They met representatives of different organizations active in the field of peace promotion and/or sport. The participants were introduced to active democracy and federalism in dialog with Swiss politicians and authorities.
Furthermore, the young leaders represented their countries in a public event that addressed sport as a means of promoting peace. On October 12, the PEACE team competed against the PROMI team in a football game, which was played with peace promoting rules and won by the PEACE team 6:2.
